Remember when handsets worked as a phone and not a lot else? The Nokia 3109 Classic may sound somewhat Luddite but actually meets the needs of a variety of users. For a start: anyone who cares not a jot for the bells and whistles can purchase a well-designed functional basic handset: the 3109 Classic that offers "distraction free communication" (Nokias phrase). It is also good for office use featuring email with attachments plus the ability to synchronise calendars and to-do lists with PCs through its USB connection. The phone is a sturdy but ergonomically pleasing 108.5 x 45.7 x 15.6 mm weighing 89 grams. It offers a tremendous battery life hands-free speaker expandable memory via a microSD memory card a business-friendly big capacity (2000-number) phone book an organiser with calendar vibration ring to-do list notes and of course email with attachments. It supports EDGE and GPRS for internet connectivity and GSM 900/1800/1900. There is Bluetooth 2.0 for hands-free calling and short-distance file sharing and up to 2 GB expandable memory (TransFlash) for additional storage in addition to 9 MB of internal memory. However a downside could be that there is no camera - less so that there is no WLAN or 3G. John Barry director mobile phones at Nokia has said: "We recognize that a sizeable number of people just want a mobile phone to stay in touch on their own terms." For these individuals and for companies who want to support their employees by providing a mobile phone the Nokia 3109 Classic "offers strong functionality and adheres to certain corporate privacy and security policies." Those security and privacy rules might well include no phones with integral cameras. The 3109 Classic does squeeze in a music player though. Battery life is stated at up to four hours talk time and 380 hours on standby.
